What is the mind? It has different connotations for different people. In daily life, when confronted with anger, one may feel compelled to vent their frustration. While procrastinating, I have not yet made up my mind. For ascetics, controlling the mind is a pathway to salvation. Can Mind control itself? Does the Mind have a self-corrective tool through which it can exercise self-control? In our bodies, where does the Mind reside? Is it our heart or brain that has something to do with it? Some suspect the pineal glands in our brain may be its abode. Or, as brilliant 17th-century philosopher René Descartes opined, the Mind is the same thing as the soul. Or is it a supercomputer with several gigabytes of memory with a powerful processing chip? Still more questions persist. Is the Mind a controller of our actions, or is it just a tenant in our body that never pays any rent? These are some of the questions that Laljee Verma has sought to answer through his brilliant philosophical exposition, “Selfish Mind, Slavish Body, A Quest into Self-Identity”.
As a first step to understanding the intricacies of the mind, the author explores the search for self. Our genetic inheritance—called “Prarabdha” in Hindi—needs further enculturation through life experiences. Since the Mind-Brain complex offers few leads, one takes a course in religion. This is where Laljee excels. The author has drawn inspiration from both Indian and Western philosophical discourses, resulting in a profound understanding of the Mind-Body complex. The strength of the book lies in its attempt to discuss the diverse viewpoints. Some of the key concepts addressed in the book include:
- The relationship between the conscious Mind and the brain.
- The conjunction between the mind and the material world.
- The intricacies of the mind include the conscious and subconscious states, as well as the ego.
- The author has beautifully crafted the mental states, the why and how of an act, and discusses the intricacy of a thought as it occurs in the mind and steers the reader to pious doing or misdoing.
Selfish Mind, Slavish Body is a deeply philosophical yet very readable work that forces the reader to frequently pause and contemplate the events in their life and search for the way forward. To a scientific mind, it encourages him to investigate: is the mind truly a master who takes all our decisions, or is it simply a consequence of some neural activity in the brain?
